Introducing Database Administration

Database administration can easily be the toughest of all IT jobs. It involves tasks like configuring, installing, designing and maintenance. It also consists of performing operations like organizing, storing, retrieving, and managing tasks. People who perform database administration are called database administrators or DBA. It is a crucial role that is never going to die. With an increase in postings for oracle apps, DBA jobs in job portals stand as proof of its never-ending popularity. They have many responsibilities in a company and do not stop within the horizons of a software company as data needs to be managed and stored in every other industry.

Responsibilities Of An Oracle DBA

A DBA should be a technically sound person who is aware of both the back end and front end technologies. They need to design a data model that maps the local design to support an organization's data and operations. They need to guide the team and evaluate the software and hardware requirements. They will have to write procedures, data structures, and other documentation required for a database. Activities like controlling access, providing user permissions with the privileges necessary come under the DBA's responsibilities. They perform data analysis and provide an execution plan. Any database performance issues need to be resolved by them. They need to have security measures and implement data integrity, data backups, and data security. They need to take immediate action in case of any data loss due to system failure or data corruption. Data retrieval, indexing, and devising storage mechanisms are part of their jobs. They need to monitor the database's performance and manage and operate database parameters. Disaster management is also the responsibility of a DBA. They need to implement stringent backup policies and maintain standard data formats. They need to take care of software and hardware failures due to viruses and phishing. In case of such losses, the database administrators should recover the database and make it available for the users. They need to find ways to optimize database performance and provide newer and advanced methods for database resource management. Performance tuning and controlling resource allocation is a part of their job. They need to update patches regularly. They need to maintain proper documentation for all their activities for future reference.

Other Database Administration Roles

Ultimately, the database administrator is a cumulative role that multiple resources can take. An Oracle DBA can be an application support engineer or be a part of system administration as a system analyst. They can also be working with a storage administrator managing the capacities of every resource. In general, Oracle database administration is one big umbrella of multiple responsibilities. A system database administration involves installing and configuring system software: a data modeler designs and models database. A database analyst does database analysis. Database backup administrator implements all backup policies. A network administrator maintains the system network, and storage administrators manage storage capacities.
